What is a Postpartum Doula?

The International Doula Institute defines a postpartum doula as a professional support person trained in the needs of the family in the days, weeks and months after birth or the addition of a new baby. The doula offers non-judgmental support, guidance, evidence based education and practical hands-on support immediately after birth through the first year. Doula originates from the Greek word meaning woman servant.

The Professional Certified Postpartum Doula is trained in 5 Core Competencies:

  1. Caring for and Understanding the Needs of the Postpartum Mom and Partner
  2. Caring for and Understanding the Needs of Baby/Babies
  3. Caring for and Understanding the Needs of the Siblings
  4. Caring for and Understanding the Needs of the Home
  5. Caring for the Whole Family Utilizing Emotional Intelligence

To Sum it all up: The Postpartum Doula mothers the new mother and her growing family. Anything from cooking to cleaning to caring for the family she can do whatever will create the most comfortable atmosphere to promote healing and love.

Okay, so you had your baby, congratulations! Now what? What do you do when you have a newborn baby to care for, but a messy house and errands to run? Unfortunately, life doesn’t stop. That’s why I am here! As a certified postpartum doula, I help ease the transition into motherhood.

Tasks for a postpartum doula:

  • Running errands
    • getting the mail
    • shopping
    • take older children to school/pick-up from school
  • Helping with household chores
    • laundry
    • dishes
    • sweeping/mopping/vacuuming
  • Grocery shopping
  • Meal prep/cooking
  • Help tend to older children
  • Take care of baby so mother can nap or shower
  • Night time care so parents can have a better nights sleep
  • Prenatal visit if wanted

Basically, I am here to help ensure a smooth transition, from birthplace to home. By helping around the house, with older children, or by running errands, it helps the mother have time to bond with her newborn baby and establish a good feeding relationship.

Why Might You Want a Postpartum Doula?

Well let me tell you: After you’ve had a major life event don’t you want people around you that will care and tend to your needs? For instance, before weddings people through parties and are always around to help you plan. For a death, the closest family is brought together and cared for. Why not for a birth? It used to be that way in America, but over the past few decades the trend has changed to where after the first day or two new mothers are left to their own devices.

Solitude after birth does not promote healthy relationships. It does allow for postpartum depression, a disconnect from the new baby, and longer recovery times. With families spread out across the states, it can be unreasonable for grandparents, siblings, or family friends to stay with the new parents for an extended period of time; This is where a postpartum doula comes in. They will come to your home, mother the mother, supporting her and her partner in their new parenting roles.

You may feel like you need or should do it all but you don’t have to, nor should you feel guilty for not being able to take on the world. Find the support that you need, whether it be family, friends, a postpartum doula, or all of the above!
